Deowyn:  A Study in Silk

Class Duration:  This is a 3-day class 

Skill Level: Some Experience with the medium and/or technique –  Some beading experience would be helpful

Deowyn Class Description: 
This class teaches ways of working with various silk fibers – Silk crepe de chine for the body, silk rods for the bodice, silk cocoons for embellishments, silk throwsters waste and other silk fibers for the knickers.  Dyeing of silk is taught, along with simple beadwork.  Coloring a silk face, sculpting the silk body parts and beaded joints are another part of the class.
Techniques students will learn:
  •  Drawing and coloring a face

  • Working with silk fibers

  • Dyeing silk;  peyote beadwork

  • Beaded flowers and joints

  • Creating dangles with silk cocoons

  • Fabric collage

  • Free motion machine work

  • Creating beautiful wings from organza

Deowyn Supply List
  • Tools for stuffing and turning

  • Collage fibers (other than the silk provided in the kit)  scraps of fabrics, threads, yarns, organza in colors of choice

  • Decorative threads for machine work – have some metallic

  • Topstitch needles for sewing machine in size 12

  • Size 11 & 15 seed beads in colors to match your theme – one color of each size

  • Delica beads in color to match theme – one color

  • ˝ gross (72) each 3 & 4 mm Swarovski bicone crystals in colors of choice

  • Beading wire in 24 gauge – gold or silver

  • Painting brushes – rounds and flats in sizes 10-12

  • Containers for mixing dyes and paints and one for water         Paper towels

  • Colored pencils – colors for shading, highlights, eyes and lips

  • Micron Pigma or Zig Millennium pens in brown, black, red

  • Sewing machine in good working condition and one you are familiar with

  • Free motion or darning foot for your sewing machine – this is not optional

  • Basic sewing kit:  fabric and paper scissors, extra bobbins, straight pins, tape measure, hand sewing needles, etc

Kit includes: 

  • Hand-out with color step photo’s

  •  Freezer paper

  • Water soluble stabilizer

  • All silk needed for project

  • 2 Swarovski rivoli’s

  • Size 15 gold or silver charlottes

  • Silk sewing machine thread

  • Stuffing

  • Fireline

  • Beading needles

  • Use of dyes and paints

  • Rubber stamps and stamp pads

  • Soldering iron with a fine point
